Medical School

The Medical School of Tongji University has offered medical education to a large number of students has enjoyed an excellent reputation both at home and abroad since it was established in 1907 as Tongji German Medical School. In 1950, the medical school of Tongji University moved to Wuhan. In 2000, Tongji University acquired Tiedao University and the medical school of Tiedao University became medical school of Tongji University. Now the Medical School is under the Faculty of Medicine and Life Science faculty of Tongji University, and consists of the School of Stomatology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Tongji Hospital, Railway Workers Hospital, and Oriental Hospital. The Medical School offers three Bachelor degree programs, twenty Master degree programs and two doctoral programs. Four hundred of its faculty are professors and associate professors, including supervisors for PHD students.

As a department strongly supported by the university, the Medical School is developing rapidly. In the summer of 2003, the School moved from its old site to the Campus on Siping Road. The new medical teaching and laboratory building covers an area of 25,000 M2. Under the leadership of Professor Fu Jiliang, Director of Faculty of Medicine and Life Science Faculty, and Professor Hu Dayi, Dean of the Medical School, the School established the Modern Intervention Treatment Center for Coronary Heart Disease, the Treatment Center of Cerebral Vessel Disease, the Micro-invasive Medical Center, and a laboratory for basic clinical experiment and research. The School has hosted numerous medical experts from home and abroad which has laid a solid ground for the development of medical science at Tongji University.

The Medical School is equipped with advanced facilities for teaching, treatment and research. Now it is initiating an over-all improvement of education with all aim to turn out more medical professionals adaptable to modern society by reforming tile curriculum design, and providing more senior staff to teach the aspiring physicians. The School has established academic exchange programs and cooperation in teaching, research, and clinical practice with its counterparts in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and U.K.
